Classes > Junior Infants

We take a station teaching approach to literacy in Junior Infants. This month 3 out of the 4 stations were dedicated to developing fine motor skills. The fourth station focused on developing pre-writing skills.

Our first Aistear theme was The Gingerbread Man. We created our own Gingerbread Men in the art station and we re-enacted the story in the role play station. We built his house and a bridge to help him cross the river in the construction station.

We learnt the poem Four Gingerbread Men in English.

In science we carried out an experiment to discover what would happen the Gingerbread Man when he got wet. We tested this using cold and hot water, the results weren’t good for the Gingerbread Man.

We practiced matching
identical objects
Pairs (we matched Fox’s socks into pairs and teachers shoes)
related objects (spoon and bowl, brush and pan, knife and fork etc.)

We revised all the colours. We learnt a colour song and poem. We focused on Primary colours. We painted colour wheels and we re-created Composition by Piet Mondrian it using pastels after examining the colours and shapes in it.

We started off sorting a random mix of things into sets and then moved onto sorting things into sets according to colour. We used the following language when sorting: same, different, belong, set.

We started PE with John Desmond last week. We learnt how to play the playground games Duck Duck Goose and Stuck in the Mud with teacher. Deidre will be teaching us Irish Dancing every Friday for the next few weeks.

Tour of Our School

It took us a few days but we met all the staff and classes in our school.
We visited the different parts of our school including the staffroom,
pitch and sensory garden.
