Water Theme
There were some very happy faces when we announced this year’s Green School Committee at assembly. Ms Flynn and Ms O’ Connor had their work cut out for them trying to pick the committee because the boys and girls of Kilbrittain N.S. wrote very impressive application letters.

Our Committee is made up of boys and girls from every class.

The current Green School Committee are working on the Water theme. We meet most weeks to come up with ideas on how we can conserve water in our school.

Water Audit
Our first job entailed finding out what things in our school use water, so we did a water audit. View the pictures below to see the results.

Recording Water Usage
Next we had to find out how much water is used in our school on a
daily basis. Every class had to record how many times their toilet was
flushed and we picked 1 person from each class to record how many times a day they washed their hands. We worked out that every child in our school washes their hands 2 to 3 times a day.

Water Usage Questionnaire
We sent a Water Usage Questionnaire home to every family in our school to discover how they use and save water in their homes. We were pleasantly surprised by some of the results. View the picture below to check out the results.

Water Usage Tips for Homes
As part of our Water Usage Questionnaire we asked homes to list some of their water saving tips. Have a read and try them out. We also found some good tips on the Green School website.

  • turn off the taps when washing your teeth - you can save 6 litres of water.
  • take a shower not a bath - don't use power showers as a 10 minute shower uses as much water as three baths!
  • fill the kettle for the right amount - you can save energy as well!
  • use waste water from dish washing to water your plants
  • never use a hose pipe in your garden
  • always fix leaking taps
  • use your dish washer and washing machine only when they are full thus saving energy as well!
